Motocross, also abbreviated as MX, is the combination from the words ¡°Motorcycle¡± and ¡°Cross Country¡±.

The motorcycles used in the motocross races are lightweight and powered by two stroke or four stroke engines. The engines are highly tuned with absorbent suspension designed to deal with the shock of heavy landings, and short gearing designed for swift acceleration rather than high top speed.

Many MX racers begin when they're young, and grow up in the sport as a family activity. But it is not the rule and if you like, you can start at any age, especially for enthusiastic trail rider, or those who love riding dirt bikes or racing when they are young.

Motorcross racing is one of the most appealing forms of motorsport, with riders performing seemingly death defying leaps, turns visibly at the edge of traction, and the effort of riders clearly visible as the move their bodies around their motorcycles to balance the bikes for maximum speed.

Capitalising on this appeal, a variant called "Supercross" has evolved, held on tighter tracks in sports stadiums with more, even higher jumps.

Although motorcyclists participate and are often the overall winners, many competitors drive modified or stock 4-wheel vehicles such as cars, trucks, ATVs and dune buggies. Race teams consist of factory supported groups that build custom fabricated vehicles and provide chase vehicles via helicopter, to the much smaller and less glamorized sportsman teams competing in an all-stock vehicle with no chase vehicle support at all.

  • Nate Adams - perhaps the only person to beat Travis Pastrana in freestyle competition. (Has beaten Pastrana 3 times). (Gravity Games, X Games, and at The Dew Action Sports Tour.) Both Gravity Games and X Games was because of Pastrana crashing.
  • Jim Mcneil - first person ever to attempt Cordova Backflip in a foam pit.
  • Jeff "Ox" Kargola - Member of "Metal Mulisha" and first person ever to Superman Seat Grab (SSG) Backflip.
  • Carey Hart - first ever to do a backflip on a 250cc dirtbike in competition.
  • Chuck Carothers - invented the body varial, named it the "Carolla".
  • Ailo Gaup - A famous freestyle motocross rider from Norway who sold fish and an old car to get his dirt bike
  • Kenny Bartram - the first ever to land a Side Saddle Backflip and is great friends with Travis Pastrana. Nickname is "Cowboy" Kenny Bartram.
