Motocross, also abbreviated as MX, is the combination from the words ¡°Motorcycle¡± and ¡°Cross Country¡±.
The motorcycles used in the motocross races are lightweight and powered by two stroke or four stroke engines. The engines are highly tuned with absorbent suspension designed to deal with the shock of heavy landings, and short gearing designed for swift acceleration rather than high top speed.
Many MX racers begin when they're young, and grow up in the sport as a family activity. But it is not the rule and if you like, you can start at any age, especially for enthusiastic trail rider, or those who love riding dirt bikes or racing when they are young.
Motorcross racing is one of the most appealing forms of motorsport, with riders performing seemingly death defying leaps, turns visibly at the edge of traction, and the effort of riders clearly visible as the move their bodies around their motorcycles to balance the bikes for maximum speed.
Capitalising on this appeal, a variant called "Supercross" has evolved, held on tighter tracks in sports stadiums with more, even higher jumps.

Design of the chequered flag
There is no standard design for the chequered flag. Although it nearly always consists of alternating black and white squares or rectangles arranged in a chequerboard pattern, the number, size, and length-width proportions of the rectangles vary from one flag to another. Also, the checkered flag typically has a black rectangle at the corner of the flag closest to the top of the flagpole. In NASCAR, the checkered flag has also had the fuel sponsor¡¯s logo (Sun Oil, since 2004) emblazoned in the centre of the flag. In addition, NASCAR has a special version for Victory Lane that has the name and date of the race on it. That flag is used for the team in winner's photographs made after the race, and usually is hung on top of the race team's headquarters as a trophy to celebrate its win.
The Auto-Cycle Union (ACU Motorcycling GB) is governing body of motorcycle sport in Great Britain (not Northern Ireland, which is governed by the MCUI, The ACU also govern the safety standards for personal protection equipment worn during racing. Only motorcycle helmets which meet ACU standards and display the appropriate ACU sticker can be worn in "speed" competition. The majority of quality helmets sold in the UK now feature an ACU Gold sticker and many riders choose these for every day use in preference to those that meet the more basic BS6658:1985 legal requirement .
